High schoolers discover their power to lead Plano forward
Plano Youth Leadership empowers sophomore students to become confident community leaders by connecting them with local officials, teaching leadership skills, and inspiring lifelong civic engagement.

Every year, Plano Youth Leadership welcomes a new class of tenth-graders—young people curious about their community but unsure of their own potential to shape it. These students come from different neighborhoods, schools, and backgrounds across Plano. Some are natural speakers; others are quieter, wondering if leadership is even for them. Over the course of the program, something shifts.
The program opens doors that students didn't know existed. Participants sit down with the Mayor, meet with the Chief of Police, and engage with education and business leaders throughout Plano. These aren't distant lectures—they're conversations where young people learn how their community actually works and where they fit into it. Through informative presentations and interactive experiences, students begin to see the issues facing Plano not as abstract problems, but as challenges they might help solve.
As the year unfolds, students are trained in real leadership techniques and gain a deeper understanding of community resources and opportunities. They discover common ground with classmates they might never have met otherwise, finding peers who share their motivation to get involved. More importantly, they start to believe in themselves. The confidence that builds isn't arrogant—it's grounded in knowledge and skill, the kind that lets a young person step forward and say, "I can do this."
By the end of their sophomore year, these teenagers have transformed their relationship with leadership and citizenship. They leave the program not just with new skills, but with a sense of purpose—understanding that they have a role to play in their community's future and the capability to play it well.
