Fresh food grows community under the Zilker oaks
Zilker Farmers Market brings Central Texas farmers, local bakers, and neighbors together on the second Sunday of every month, making fresh, healthy food accessible to everyone in the community while building connections over seasonal produce and live music.

On a Sunday morning in the Zilker neighborhood, families begin to gather under the sprawling oak trees near Little Zilker Park. The air fills with the scent of fresh-baked sourdough, locally roasted coffee, and the earthy smell of produce pulled straight from Central Texas farms just hours before. What started as a community vision is now becoming a monthly ritual—a place where neighbors who might pass each other on the street instead find themselves browsing together, tote bags in hand, choosing between heirloom tomatoes and fresh eggs from nearby ranches.
The farmers market exists because the Zilker community saw a gap. Not everyone has equal access to the fresh, healthy food that sustains a thriving neighborhood. By bringing producers directly to the people—farmers with seasonal harvests, ranchers with eggs and dairy, bakers with pastries made from scratch—the market removes barriers and builds trust. A family using nutrition-assistance programs can stretch their benefits further here. A curious child learns where food actually comes from. An older neighbor discovers a new favorite jam or honey vendor.
Every second Sunday at Zilker Elementary, the market becomes more than a transaction. Local Austin musicians provide a soundtrack while volunteers—neighbors volunteering neighbors—help make it all run smoothly. The market welcomes strollers and leashed dogs, accepts both cards and cash, and costs nothing to enter. It's designed for the real lives people live: busy, sometimes tight on budget, but hungry for connection and good food.
This small, all-volunteer nonprofit is rooted in a simple belief: that a neighborhood thrives when people know where their food comes from and can access it affordably. Month by month, under those Zilker oaks, that vision takes shape—one apple, one conversation, one shared Sunday at a time.
