Breaking cycles of poverty, one community at a time

Cara Sottile had been doing humanitarian work in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. In January 2019 she visited Damabiah Orphanage in Port-au-Prince and learned that the 75 children living there were eating and drinking only every two or three days. The compound had no running water, no electricity and no space to grow food. The school on its grounds was underfunded and barely operating. She went home to the United States and, working with her network in Haiti and friends in the U.S., organized a food delivery. Then another. To keep them going and to take on the problems underneath them, a board of directors was formed and One With Earth was born. Seven years later the deliveries still run every two weeks, and the work around them has grown: clean water and solar power at the compound, a school rebuilt and supported, medical care funded when a child needs it. Several young adults who grew up at Damabiah are now in college, including medical and dental school, with their tuition sponsored. None of that has happened in easy conditions. Political instability, gang violence and insecurity have made everyday life in Port-au-Prince dangerous and have made getting food and supplies in safely both harder and more expensive. The organization's steadiness through a pandemic, through rising costs and through countless logistical problems is the part Sottile is proudest of — along with the relationships built with children she has now watched grow up.

Since 2019, we have continued to support these children through a global pandemic, political instability, violence, rising costs, and countless logistical challenges.

What the deliveries turned into

Food and water came first, because nothing else is possible without them. What One With Earth has added since:

  • Clean water and solar power at the orphanage compound
  • A school rebuilt and supported on the grounds where the children live
  • Medical care funded when a child needs it
  • College tuition sponsored for young adults raised at Damabiah, including medical and dental school

A small team, growing carefully

One With Earth is primarily donor- and fundraising-driven, and its volunteer base is small: most of the work in Haiti is carried out with partners on the ground rather than by volunteers traveling in.

As the organization grows, it recognizes the importance of having appropriate screening and safeguards in place, particularly for anyone who may work directly with children or other vulnerable people. That is the right order of operations for an organization this size: build the program, and put the safeguards in place before volunteers ever have direct contact with children.

How to help One With Earth

The children at Damabiah can count on the deliveries because the support behind them is steady. Monthly sponsors are what make that possible. Three ways to help:

  • Monthly sponsors — $30 a month sponsors a child's food and water. $50 a month supports the orphanage's broader needs.
  • College sponsors — sponsor a young adult from Damabiah through higher education, including students now in medical and dental school.
  • Donors — give once, or support the annual All is Well fundraiser that keeps the deliveries funded through the year.
