About the volunteer hour value calculator
Volunteers are the backbone of most nonprofits — but their time rarely shows up on a balance sheet. The value of volunteer time lets you translate donated hours into a credible dollar figure that funders, board members, and the IRS recognize. It is one of the most powerful numbers a small nonprofit can put in a grant application.
This calculator uses the latest Value of Volunteer Time published by Independent Sector, including state-by-state figures derived from Bureau of Labor Statistics earnings data. Enter your total volunteer hours, pick your state, and you will get an instant, sourced valuation you can export to Excel or PDF and drop straight into a report.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How is the value of volunteer time calculated?
Independent Sector calculates the value based on the average hourly earnings of all production and non-supervisory workers on private non-farm payrolls (from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), increased by 15.3% to account for fringe benefits. State figures index that national value to each state’s local wages.
What is the value of a volunteer hour in 2025?
The national estimated value of volunteer time for 2025 is $36.14 per hour (Independent Sector preliminary estimate). The most recent final figure is $34.79 for 2024. State values range from about $18 in Puerto Rico to nearly $55 in the District of Columbia.
Can I use this number in a grant application?
Yes. Documenting in-kind volunteer value is a widely accepted way to demonstrate community support and match requirements. Cite Independent Sector as the source and note whether you used the national or your state figure. Always confirm a specific funder’s allowable match rules.
Should I use the national rate or my state rate?
Either is defensible. The state rate is more precise for locally focused programs, while the national rate is common for organizations operating across multiple states. The calculator gives you both so you can choose.
Is volunteer time tax-deductible for the volunteer?
No. The IRS does not allow individuals to deduct the value of their volunteer time or services. The value of volunteer time is an accounting and reporting measure for the organization, not a personal tax deduction.
