How it works
A fun start — with real science underneath
Most “what kind of volunteer are you?” quizzes are pure entertainment. This one starts that way on purpose — then, if you want, goes deeper into a genuinely research-backed read of how you help best.
1. The quiz — 60 seconds, just for fun
Eight quick questions match you to one of six volunteer archetypes — The Caregiver, The Builder, The Connector, The Advocate, The Organizer, or The Mentor — with the causes where that type shines. No sign-up, shareable, and honestly a little addictive.
2. Your Volunteer Profile — science-backed
The quiz keeps going into a short deep read that reveals what truly drives you as a volunteer and your standout strengths — then the roles you’ll thrive in and how an organization can keep you engaged. This is the part built on real research (and you can skip it if you just want your type).
Rooted in science
Built on the Volunteer Functions Inventory
The heart of your Volunteer Profile is the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) — a validated, peer-reviewed instrument published by Clary, Snyder, and colleagues in 1998 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. After decades of research, it remains the most widely used tool for understanding why people volunteer.
Its core insight is that the same volunteer act can serve very different personal motivations — six of them, to be exact. Two people can shelve books at the same food pantry for completely different reasons, and knowing that reason is what predicts whether they’ll stay. Researchers call this functional matching: when a volunteer’s role fits their dominant motivation, they report more satisfaction and volunteer longer. Your profile scores all six functions and surfaces your strongest.
Values
You volunteer to live out what you believe in.
Understanding
You volunteer to learn, grow, and use your strengths.
Enhancement
You volunteer because it lifts you up, too.
Career
You volunteer to build skills and open doors.
Social
You volunteer to belong and connect with others.
Growth & Balance
You volunteer to find perspective and peace of mind.
Plus a strengths snapshot
On top of your motivations, the profile adds a brief, character-strengths snapshot — inspired by the VIA classification of 8 volunteering-relevant strengths (kindness, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and more). We label it a snapshot on purpose: it’s a quick, illustrative read, not the full validated inventory — because being honest about the science is part of respecting it.
For nonprofit leaders
Place every volunteer where they’ll thrive
Run a program on VolunteerBadge? Invite your volunteers to take the quiz from your dashboard. When a volunteer chooses to share, you see their Volunteer Profile — what drives them, their strengths, and the roles they’ll thrive in — so you can place, recognize, and keep each person the way that fits them best.
Better fit
Match people to roles that match their motivations.
Better retention
Well-matched volunteers are more satisfied and stay longer.
Never for screening
Sharing is opt-in and used only for placement — never to evaluate or reject anyone, and fully separate from background checks.
