A Helmet, a Officer, and a Safer Ride Home

Helmets First partners with St. Louis-area police to put free bike helmets on local kids, helping protect young heads one ride at a time. Their work turns everyday encounters into lasting safety habits.

On a sunny afternoon in the St. Louis metro area, a child pedaling down the sidewalk might be stopped by a friendly officer rather than a traffic ticket. Instead of a warning about rules, the child receives a free bike helmet that fits snugly, along with a few words about why it matters. That small moment can become the start of a habit that keeps a young rider safe for years.

Helmets First works alongside local police to make these moments happen. Because the program is built around community partnership, officers know the neighborhoods, the families, and the kids who spend their summers on two wheels. The result is a gift that arrives with a sense of trust and connection, not just a piece of gear.

Think about the parent who watches their child ride off wearing a new helmet, knowing one more little head is better protected. Think about the kid who proudly adjusts the straps and rides a little taller. That is the picture Helmets First hopes to paint across the region, one helmet at a time, as neighbors come together to look out for the children who live among them.

Joe on The Sign-In Table

Joe Cangas
Episode drops Thursday, November 26Joe Cangas is a pediatrician and Army veteran who started Helmets First in St. Louis in 2004 after seeing how many head injuries a bike helmet would have prevented. The charity hands 1,000 to 2,000 helmets a year to local police, who give them to children they stop — an encounter that protects a head and, he hopes, changes what a child thinks an officer is for.
