Turning Wooden Barrels Into Community Treasure
Barrels by Smiley transforms reclaimed barrels into functional art and practical goods, breathing new life into materials that might otherwise end up in landfills while creating meaningful work in the community.

Every barrel that arrives at Barrels by Smiley tells a story—it might have once held wine, whiskey, or olive oil, bearing the marks of its previous life in faint stains and weathered wood. What happens next is where the real magic begins. Volunteers and participants gather in the workshop, tools in hand, to imagine what each barrel could become: a planter for a community garden, a storage bench for a local school, a table for a neighbor's back porch.
The work is purposeful and visible. There's something deeply satisfying about sanding away years of grime, about measuring twice and cutting once, about standing back to see a forgotten barrel transformed into something beautiful and useful. Each person who touches the wood—whether they're learning woodworking for the first time or refining skills they've had for years—becomes part of a larger cycle of creation and renewal.
When a finished barrel project leaves the workshop and finds its way into someone's home or a local business, it carries with it the care and intention of those hands that shaped it. The organization doesn't just divert waste from the landfill; it builds connection, teaches skills, and reminds everyone involved that there's tremendous value in seeing potential where others see only something used up and ready to be discarded.
