Homeschooled athletes find team, faith, and excellence

For homeschooled families in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, finding a competitive athletic outlet can feel like searching for something that doesn't exist. Traditional school teams aren't an option, and travel-league programs don't always align with a family's values or schedule. That's where Northland Royals steps in—a volunteer, parent-run organization built by a homeschool mom in 2010 to give homeschooled boys and girls the gift of competitive volleyball.

What makes Northland Royals different isn't just that the girls and boys play on the court. The organization is rooted in three pillars: exemplary conduct and character, team unity, and hard work. Through practices and competitive games, players develop technical skills while learning what it means to commit to a team. But the real focus goes deeper—to help young athletes grow in how they show up for each other and for their community, both on and off the court.

The teams compete in the HSWIL Volleyball Conference, which brings together homeschool teams from Illinois and Wisconsin for regular matches. Beyond conference play, Northland Royals maintains a tradition of games against local Christian private schools, weaving the program into the fabric of the broader athletic community. Whether it's a varsity player or a younger athlete on the 12U team, each member experiences what it looks like to represent something bigger than themselves.

As an independently run organization sustained by volunteer parents and community sponsors, Northland Royals depends on families and local businesses who believe in this mission. When players find sponsors to support their participation, it makes a real difference—it's how the program keeps doors open for the next generation of homeschooled athletes. The young people who pull on a Royals jersey learn that excellence in volleyball is about more than winning games; it's about becoming the kind of person who lifts others up and plays with integrity, a lesson that travels far beyond the court.
