Neighbors helping neighbors in Butler County
For over 170 years, St. Vincent de Paul Butler has quietly met the immediate needs of neighbors facing food insecurity, housing instability, and hardship—connecting people in crisis with groceries, clothing, and emergency assistance.

On a quiet morning in Butler County, a family sits down to a table with groceries they wouldn't have been able to afford. Down the street, someone steps into a thrift store and finds a winter coat that fits and costs what they can manage. In an office nearby, a neighbor receives a conversation—not judgment—about how to keep the lights on for one more month. These moments happen because of a 170-year commitment that runs deep in Butler County's roots.
The work unfolds across three simple but powerful programs. The Food Bank opens its doors three mornings a week, stocked by volunteers and neighbors, offering groceries to families who need them most. The Thrift Store doesn't just provide affordable clothing and household goods—its revenue cycles directly back into the community, funding everything else the organization does. And when someone faces an unexpected crisis—a sudden rent increase, a utility shut-off notice, an emergency with no safety net—Client Aid meets that person where they are, offering one-on-one help tailored to their situation.
What makes this work different is its scale and reach. More than 15,000 clients each year turn to St. Vincent de Paul Butler for help. Seven parish conferences spread across four locations ensure that assistance stays close to home. Every dollar raised stays in Butler County, directed toward the people and families who live here. Volunteers form the backbone of every program, driven by the belief that help is most meaningful when it comes from someone in your own community.
For 170 years, Vincentians in Butler County have lived out a simple principle: when you help, others are helped. It's not complicated, and it's not distant. It's neighbor to neighbor, meeting real need with real compassion, one morning, one conversation, one grateful moment at a time.
