Nevada Volunteer Background Checks: VECHS, Child Care & School Rules (2026)

Nevada has no statute requiring every nonprofit to check its volunteers. Its fingerprint route for organizations that serve children, older adults and people with disabilities says each request "must be voluntary," and the fitness decision is "the sole responsibility" of the organization. Specific settings are different. This video covers where Nevada says "must," what a check costs, and who has to report abuse.

In this video

  • Why Nevada has no general volunteer screening mandate
  • VECHS: Nevada's voluntary fingerprint route
  • Where checks are required: child care, schools, foster care and child-placing agencies
  • The 2023 school changes and the camp and league "staff member" question
  • Which volunteers must report abuse within 24 hours
  • Licensed child care fingerprints every volunteer 18 or older who isn't a parent of an enrolled child, within 24 hours of first being present and every 5 years, with a Statewide Central Registry check.
  • Public and charter schools fingerprint volunteers likely to have unsupervised contact with pupils, before they start and every 5 years. Since 2023 (A.B. 503), private schools check the Central Registry only, and a nonprofit's own check no longer excuses a volunteer from the school's.
  • A seasonal or temporary recreation program must check each staff member within 3 days of hire and every 5 years. The statute doesn't say whether unpaid volunteers count as staff members.
  • A volunteer's State-and-FBI fingerprint check is $31.50 ($21.50 State plus $10 FBI), against $39.00 for other submissions, plus the fingerprinting agency's fee. A State Revolving Account may cover costs for registered nonprofits serving children under 16 that apply first; whether it is funded today is unverified.
  • School volunteers, youth-shelter volunteers and volunteers of child-abuse advice and referral services are mandated reporters and must report within 24 hours.

For Nevada roles no statute reaches, such as a church youth leader or a mentor, VolunteerBadge runs volunteer background checks for $5 each, with free ID and live-selfie verification on applications and no setup fee, contract or per-seat fee. A VolunteerBadge check is not a VECHS or NABS check, and it never replaces a fingerprint or Central Registry check where Nevada law requires one.
